Portal West was opened by Paul Ortiz in November of 2022, and immediately became a haven for the community - everyone from remote workers, to students, families, folks visiting Cuyahoga National Park, and more.
Whether you're a coffee nerd like us, looking for a place to meet new and old friends, need to cool off or caffeinate yourself for a hike in the valley, or just want a chill place to get your work done, we're here for you.
Our People
Paul is the owner of Portal West Coffee. He has over 10 years of experience in the specialty coffee industry involving work as a barista, roaster, equipment maintenance technician, consultant, and trainer.
He has a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences from the University of Akron, with a focus in Spanish Language. He is a first-generation immigrant from the golden, illustrious mountains of Ecuador - where he often played in the plaintain-covered forests. He grew up in Northwest Akron after immigrating, and has lived and worked in several large cities including Seattle, Manhattan, and Des Moines before coming back to Akron to start Portal West.
